Dr. Olivia Perez de Acha, MD, Resident physician from MedStar Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center is a highly accomplished medical professional with a strong background in medical research and academic teaching. She obtained her Medical Degree (MD) from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, in Madrid, Spain and has dedicated her career to advancing knowledge and improving patient care in various fields of medicine. She is currently completing her Internal Medicine Residency at MedStar Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center, which is renowned as the largest hospital in the nation's capital. After this, she will proceed to do a Chief Resident year (June2024-June2025), further enhancing her skills and leadership in the field of medicine.
Before commencing her Internal Medicine residency, Dr. Perez de Acha devoted two and a half years to intensive research endeavors, resulting in the publication of more than 10 papers and abstracts. She worked as Professional Research Assistant at the Laboratory of Dan Sherbenou, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she investigating novel immunotherapy targets like CD46 and ICAM-1 in multiple myeloma. Her research during that time aimed to understand the mechanisms of resistance in Daratumumab-refractory MM patients, with the ultimate goal of improving treatment outcomes and patient survival. Likewise, she also worked as a MD Summer Research fellow at the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics in the National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health. There, Dr. Perez de Acha explored the potential of exosomes as biomarkers in cancer.
Dr. Perez de Acha has also actively participated in scientific conferences, presenting her research findings and engaging with fellow researchers. Her contributions have been recognized through the presentation of competitive meeting abstracts at renowned conferences, including the American Society of Hematology, Society of General Internal Medicine, and Clinical Lymphoma Myeloma and Leukemia.
In addition to her research pursuits, Dr. Perez de Acha has a passion for medical education and has demonstrated excellence in teaching. She has served two consecutive years as a Medical School Small Group Facilitator at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she guided first-year medical students in small group sessions focused on topics such as anemias, bleeding and thrombosis, and blood cancer. She has also engaged in further professional development by completing the Medical Educator Course at Georgetown University Hospital and obtaining the Medical Education Research Certification (MERC) from the MedStar Health Research Institute.
Dr. Perez de Acha's commitment to giving back to the community is evident through her volunteer work. She has actively participated in various outreach programs, including the MedStar Outreach program, where she provided healthcare services to elderly community members, and the Young Hands in Science Outreach Program, where she developed and conducted fun-science lessons for elementary school students. She has also volunteered her medical expertise in international settings, such as Cuba, Mexico, Cambodia and Indonesia, providing healthcare and educational support to underserved populations.
Olivia aspires to further expand her diverse experience and expertise in medical research, teaching, and community service, with a specific focus on benign hematology. She envisions continuing her trajectory by pursuing a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship following her Chief Resident year.
