Satheesh Chonat, MD, is an associate professor of pediatrics at Emory University and a classical hematologist at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. He specializes in the care of children and young adults with nonmalignant rare blood disorders by using a variety of clinical and research-based tools. Dr. Chonat is the site investigator for various clinical and translational research projects, focused on rare red blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease, pyruvate kinase disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
As a physician-scientist, he does laboratory research that explores the intersection of red blood cell physiology, transfusion medicine, and complement biology. He leverages the use of various tools including pre-clinical animal models, human samples, and microfluidics to investigate the cellular mechanisms and consequences of complement dysregulation in different disorders, specifically hyperhemolysis and thrombotic microangiopathy. The primary objective is to apply the fundamental and applied research discoveries to enhance the treatment of individuals suffering from hematological illnesses.
