Vivien Sheehan, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Translational Research in the SCD Program at Children's Heathcare of Atlanta/Emory University School of Medicine. She received her BS and PhD degrees in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, and she came to Emory for her MD training where she was introduced to sickle cell disease by Dr. Peter Lane. After her Medicine/Pediatrics residency in Cincinnati (where she met Dr. Joiner), Dr. Sheehan went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for her Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship. She also completed adult hematology training at University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, and she is double boarded in pediatric hematology/oncology and medical hematology. Dr. Sheehan will join the SCD team for her clinical effort. She is NIH funded and engaged in SCD translational research. She is particularly interested in establishing a robust biorepository for biochemical and genetic studies in sickle cell disease and in assessing the effects of curative therapies on cellular physiology and rheology.
