Julia Z. Xu, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Classical Hematology and the Vascular Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. She specializes in the care of adults with sickle cell disease and other red blood cell disorders. She received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her MD from Columbia University. She completed combined internal medicine-global health residency training at Duke University, where she obtained a Master of Science in Global Health and was a Fogarty International Center research fellow. She completed her hematology fellowship at the NIH, where she led early-phase clinical trials of a novel drug therapy in patients with sickle cell disease. Dr. Xu currently leads a clinical and translational research program at the University of Pittsburgh focused on evaluating new drug therapies and biomarkers in SCD. Her research interests have included identifying predictors of treatment response, kidney function decline, and treatments for chronic anemia in SCD. With her strong research and global health background, she is dedicated to working with local and international partners to advance the treatment of chronic complications in individuals living with SCD globally.
